Chromatic Echo

A responsive lamp that detects surrounding color and translates it into ambient illumination.

Chromatic Echo is a responsive lighting object that detects color from its surroundings and translates the sampled hue into illuminated output. Developed as a one-week cybernetics assignment, the project combines computer vision, programmable lighting and a 3D-printed enclosure into a single interactive system. A camera captures the color presented in front of the lamp, while image-processing logic identifies the dominant hue and maps it to NeoPixel LEDs housed inside the body. The perforated PLA shell diffuses the internal light through a gradient of openings, allowing the detected color to become visible across the surface rather than appearing as a single point source. The form was designed to balance light transmission, structural stability and fabrication efficiency. Created with Zoe Wall, the project explores a direct feedback relationship between environment, sensing and actuation, demonstrating how an object can perceive a visual condition and respond to it through changing light in real time.
