FDC Civic Center
A civic center where architecture and filmmaking intersect through montage, juxtaposition and cultural exchange.
The FDC Civic Center for Film Arts and Culture reimagines the legacy of Bangladesh Film Development Corporation as a contemporary cultural and civic destination. The project combines a film museum, archives and modern studios with public programs including an art gallery, library, cineplex and open-air amphitheater. Its conceptual development draws from Sergei Eisenstein’s Montage Theory and the Kuleshov Effect, exploring how the juxtaposition of independent elements can generate new meanings. This cinematic principle is translated architecturally through fragmented forms, intersecting circulation and contrasting spatial characters, alongside ideas influenced by Bernard Tschumi’s deconstructivist approach. Existing FDC buildings and their recognizable architectural characteristics are studied, extracted and reinterpreted within the new composition. Commercial floors, restaurants and event spaces support the civic programs and long-term activity of the complex, transforming the site into a collaborative environment for filmmaking, education, culture and public engagement.
